Fashion Design & Production course outline

This is a class that is designed to introduce the concepts of fashion design. The class provides understanding of the initial stages of the fashion design development to a final collection. The students express concepts through research and development of their own fashion design creations. Works accomplished in the course include: Understanding of the fashion design market, Gathering of concepts and ideas, Sketchbook development, Mood boards/Inspiration boards, Fashion Illustrations, Technical illustrations, Fabric analysis and Presenting a fashion collection.

Week 1

• Introduction to Styles and Trends. Understanding of what inspires concepts and designs
• Fashion Forecasting information: Sources
• Fashion cycles, Fashion categories and Price points
• Introduction to Inspiration ideas and the development of the concepts
• Presentation of a Sketchbook
• Beginning of Sketchbook development

Week 2

• Understanding of what inspires us for a collection
• Selecting of price pt., customer and age group of individuals you’ll be designing for
• Presentation of Sketchbook development
• How to collect color ideas from inspiration concepts

Week 3

• Take a trip to a local art gallery/ museum
• Collect information via drawing, photos or other for inspiration ideas
• Present collected information from trip in sketchbook and add more information for next class

Week 4

• Begin drawing figure illustrations
• Understanding how the body is divided into 9 heads
• Drawing both the front and back of a fashion figure

Week 5

• Continuation of figure drawing
• Selecting different poses to illustrate
• Drawing of the head, hands and feet

Week 6

• Introduction of fabrics and color concepts.
• Focusing on real and acrylic materials
• Applying fabric ideas to a selected inspiration

Week 7

• Take trip to the fabric market to collect fabrics for design ideas
• Understanding fabrics, synthetic, woven, knit, silk, cotton, etc.
• Should have finalized color and fabrics from an array of fabrics selected

Week 8

• Developing designs from a selected inspiration
• Selection of a final 5 designs for full illustration and rendering
• Developing poses that suit the selected designs

Week 9

• Understanding of technical illustrations and how they are used
• Drawing of technical’s to go back with developed designs
• Applying all detailed information to technical’s

Week 10

• Finalize all designs and illustrations
• Work on presentation format
• Present your final collection to class for critique
