Interior Design course outline

Interior Design CourseShanghai is one of the most intense and creative cities in terms of architecture and interior design. This program will draw out the influential characters and combine with comprehensive standards of excellence in design education.
This six-week course covers basics of improving space such as residential and commercial interior. Topics include floor plans, color use, composition, storage ideas, and finishing touches. Each lesson will guide students to understand space and to design in balance of aesthetic and function. Students will be introduced to the elements of Interior Design and the source of inspiration to develop their design concept. Thru this study, each will be learning from the process of planning & furnishing to the initial stage of the practical practice. This is a highly interactive class where people present and discuss about different ideas. The process is designed to advance technical skills and to understand visual language through sketchbook review and critique on own projects. Students are encouraged to bring material samples, and snapshots of their personal space for in-class discussion.

Interior Design course content

  • Introduction to Interior Design
  • Brief review on design elements and the method of gathering design ideas
  • Design study: learning design process and the relation of human scale to the form and space
  • Overview of contemporary design in Shanghai: understanding current market by reading cultural influence and style in interior & architecture in Shanghai
  • Sketchbook (interior & general sketch) development for basic freehand skills and brainstorming train
  • Study of design elements and drafting practice for the layout study
  • Learn the basic principle of design and find creative solution for the space by using practical application
  • Study color, materials, lighting and furniture design in space context
  • Design research on inspirational ideas and developing concepts
  • Overview of various types of space: residential, retail, office, restaurant, and etc.
  • Introduction to the design process, visual communication with architectural drawings
  • Begin with development of two-dimensional drawings such as floor plans, sections and elevations
  • Design project begins
  • Development of design concept with drafting skill
  • Brief introduction to the three-dimensional drawings before the computer aided drawing use
  • Overview of computer aided drawings and graphic skills
  • Survey of art & related fields and cultural study for the development of design concepts
  • Progressive study: from abstract to problem-solving through analysis and research
  • Sketchbook development review
  • Practice of design tools and application
  • Explore forms with practical functions of the space and find creative ways of solving problems
  • Learn to read working drawings and to understand technical information and construction process
  • Application and specification of color, material, furniture and lighting design

Presentation techniques

  • Explore new presentation styles through design projects.
  • Application of photography and digital drawing techniques that are useful in portfolio development
  • Develop rendering methods by understanding of texture, tone, and color.
  • Incorporation of digital drawing and rendering techniques in composition
  • Professional practice
  • Focused on the design practice as a professional business
  • Practice of communication skill, budget and costing, contract, project management as professional services related to client/contractor relationships
  • Finalize design & illustrations in the context of presentation format
  • Final sketchbook review & design critique
