As a nurse, I was very interested in Chinese Traditional Medicine. It is fascinating and fun. The Jiao Tong University TEFL course was very well conducted. The teacher, Jacobus, was extremely resourceful with extensive knowledge in the teaching field, especially with regards to the Chinese Educational System. As all good things must come to an end, so has the Spring TEFL course at Jiao Tong University. I really like several aspects of your TEFL class. The first one was your insight to the Chinese education system. The second was your hands on approach. I really enjoyed it when you let us all teach small demonstration lessons. Your lecturing and showing us the teaching style is a great asset for me. Lastly, was your enthusiasm, which made each class fun and enjoyable. I have been in Shanghai since 2005 and have had the pleasure of taking 4 different courses at Jiao Tong University: Photography, Web Design, Graphic Design and Fashion Design.
What I find so great about the courses offered is they are extremely practical and are very much based around what you wish to get out of them. The lecturers have all actually performed the skills in their own professional work lives, and don’t just teach them, which gives a true life perspective to them.
I took Graphic Design last semester and got a great deal out of it. Having virtually never done any design work before, by the end of the course I was happily using 2 different types of software to produce designs for a new clothing company I was setting up. The classes were excellently executed by Chris, who was so helpful both in class and out of class – he would answer emails throughout the week out of class time.
Fashion Design was possibly my favorite course so far. Annie was a wonderful teacher who, despite herself actually being an accomplished designer, would actually nurture each student’s ability rather than just try to teach us her own particular style. The class is excellent both for complete beginners and students with some experience.
I now tell people I meet to go down to Jiao Tong and check out what is on offer. The courses I took were excellent but I know they have a great deal more. The staff in the office are so helpful and friendly – Jilly and Steven. It is great to learning a new skill at ICEC, SJTU and I would say worth every penny. Michael Dean
